Low-Grade Secondary Copper Sulfide Ores

Method for Recovering Copper from Low-Grade Secondary Copper Sulfide Ores

This method adopts a combined process integrating flotation, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW). The low-grade secondary copper sulfide ore is first crushed and screened: the fine fraction is processed by flotation to produce copper concentrate, while the coarse fraction is treated via the heap leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning process to produce cathode copper.

Compared with the single flotation process, this process eliminates the grinding operation, thus saving the vast majority of power consumption and steel ball costs required for grinding. In addition, after treatment by a high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR), the ore has a high degree of monomer liberation, which helps improve the grade of copper concentrate during flotation.

Compared with the single heap leaching process, the ore fed into the heap under this process has finer particle size, lower fine ore content and better permeability. Moreover, after HPGR treatment, abundant stress-induced microcracks are formed inside the ore, which shortens the copper leaching cycle and improves the copper leaching rate.

This process boasts the advantages of simple operation, energy and consumption reduction, high-efficiency and low-cost production, high copper recovery rate, environmental friendliness and easy industrial application, realizing highly efficient recovery of copper.
