Hydrometallurgical Extraction of Rare and Precious Metals

The hydrometallurgical extraction process for rare and precious metals comprises the following steps:

First, pretreat solid raw material powder containing rare and precious metals with oxygen;

Next, treat the material obtained from the previous step with carbon monoxide gas or hydrogen;

Then transfer the solid material processed through the above two steps into a glass bottle, add acidic solutions (such as acidic potassium permanganate solution) into the bottle, and place the sealed bottle into an autoclave pre-filled with water, ensuring no external water ingress into the glass bottle;

Afterwards, fill the autoclave with oxygen and other required gases, seal the autoclave, disconnect it from the gas supply line, secure the autoclave on a shaking table, and allow it to shake freely with the operation of the table;

Finally, heat the water inside the autoclave, so that the rare and precious metals in the solid raw material powder in the glass bottle are leached under high temperature and high pressure.

This method is particularly suitable for extracting platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) from spent automotive catalysts. Under optimized conditions, the extraction recoveries of platinum, palladium and rhodium can reach 99%, 99% and 99% respectively.
