Capturing Rare and Precious Metals from Spent Catalysts

The method for capturing rare and precious metals from spent catalysts falls into the field of solid waste resource utilization. Silicon waste, rare and precious metal-bearing spent catalysts, slagging agents and additives are mixed and subjected to reduction smelting. After the smelting process is completed, slag-metal separation is performed to obtain rare and precious metal-containing silicon-based alloys and waste slag.

The obtained rare and precious metal-containing silicon-based alloy is ground to powder with a particle size of less than 74 μm, followed by acid leaching with aqua regia and filtration to produce silicon powder and a rare and precious metal-containing leachate. The resulting silicon powder is pickled with a fluorine-containing acid solution and filtered to yield high-purity silicon and a precious metal-containing filtrate. Fluoride is added to the aforementioned rare and precious metal-containing leachate to induce precipitation, and rare earth metal fluoride precipitates and another batch of precious metal-containing filtrate are collected after filtration.

This method can simultaneously treat two different types of industrial solid waste, and boasts remarkable economic benefits and broad industrialization prospects.
